Addressing Compassion Fatigue & Burnout in the Fire Service
This training will help attendees better understand compassion fatigue, burnout and how a career in the fire service may make it more likely that someone will experience these conditions.
Compassion fatigue is characterized by emotional and physical exhaustion that causes the diminished ability to empathize with others. This type of fatigue is common in helping professions and can influence a responder’s ability to effectively and compassionately care for the community, as well as their families. Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by chronic stress, overwhelming demands at work, and poor self-care. Burnout is a treatable condition, but if left unmanaged, can lead to even greater amounts of stress and possibly a diagnosable behavioral health condition.
Compassion fatigue and burnout are not uncommon amongst fire service members, making it crucial that these men and women have an adequate understanding of how each condition develops, learn how to consistently practice adaptive self-care and treatment options, should a member be challenged by either condition.
Gambling Addiction: Exploring Prevalence Among First Responders
First responders work in high stress environments, which may contribute to the increased risk for mental health or substance use problems among this population. Gambling is an addictive behavior and has important parallels with alcohol, substances, and other mental health disorders such as PTSD and depressive disorders. Problematic gambling includes a range of clinically significant impairment to subclinical problems described as low or moderate risk, which are less severe, but nonetheless reflect a maladaptive way of coping with stress. This webinar will address the special needs and risk factors among first responders around problem gambling.
Impacts of Military Service on First Responder Behavioral Health
This training will highlight the convergence of veterans in the first responder community and the impact on behavioral health. Many first responders have previous military backgrounds and can even be considered preferred hires among municipal employers. While this experience can be very beneficial to the new responder, potential past exposure to trauma may also pose future challenges. This traning is intended to explore the ways in which a previous military career is a protective and risk factor for various behavioral health challenges among those in other first responder professions. Molly Jones, LSW will be joined by IAFF Center of Excellence Executive Director and U.S. Army veteran, Marc Rattigan, and Rt. Marine Sergeant/Infantry Squad Leader and Somerville, MA fire fighter, Mike Jefferson to share their insight.
